Description
The designed landfill was authorized by the Sicilian Government (environmental integrated authorization set forth by the Italian Decree D.D.G. no. 649 of 20/11/2012); the disposed waste will mainly be non-hazardous waste deriving from the mechanical and biological treatment of municipal solid waste. The overall volume available is about 2.000.000 mc, which is divided into two separated basins: the basin B is already built and used to dispose the waste, and the basin A, which is currently under construction.
The project of the landfill was designed in accordance with the Italian Decree No. 36/03 and No. 152/06 to preserve the environment; the plant will also be provided with a system for the on-site leachate treatment and a system for the exploitation of biogas produced after the landfill closure.

CONTAINMENT BASIN FOR THE STORAGE TANKS IN LANDFILL “649 A”:
Construction works of the containment basin for the storage tanks of leachate produced by the waste that will be disposed in landfill “649 A” are begun. The basin dimensions are 16m x 12m and it will contain No 6 tanks of about 50 cubic meters each. The foundation ground has been protected with a HDPE waterproofing liner covered by a layer of geocomposite draining material. The leachate stored inside the tanks, through the pipeline that will be built, will be treated in the specific system when it is finished.
SECOND ELEVATION BERM IN LANDFILL “649 B”
After the first level has been filled up, the landfilling continues in the second level. The waste is daily dumped and covered with fine material, according to the designing provisions. Due to the height of the berm (approximately 5 m), the landfilling is carried out in two stages; the first phase is completed at an intermediate height compared to the total one.
SUPERIOR LEACHATE DRAINING NETWORK FORTHE SECOND SUB-BASIN IN LANDFILL “649 A”
Construction works of the superior leachate draining network for the second sub-basin in landfill “649A” have been finished.
The network has a double main pipe of 315 mm nominal diameter , and secondary pipes of 200 mm nominal diameter connected to the main pipes. The network is in punctured HDPE; once all special pieces are welted, the network has been covered with draining material; the piping network will be used to put the leachate into a well which will be soon built. Then the leachate will be pumped into no. 6 storage tanks through jacketed pipes.
